Mr Vasava, who is known to be close to Ahmed Patel, said he made a decision to vote for the Congress candidate as "he is unhappy with the ruling party's works for the poor and tribal population" that he represents.

Yadav's tweet also comes at a time when the party has forged ties with the BJP in Bihar to form government, something that apparently did not go down well with him.

Sharad Yadav backs party's Gujarat MLA Chhotu Vasava who voted for Ahmed Patel.

In a display of defiance against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, senior JD-U leader and former party president Sharad Yadav on Thursday declared he was still with the Grand Alliance of the RJD and Congress. However the MLA himself did not make it clear and said he had voted for the nation. "But Vaghela betrayed Ahmed Patel during polling", the source said.

"Who is KC Tyagi to say anything?"

"I have voted for Ahmed Patel and performed my duty of being a loyal friend", Vasava said attacking the state's BJP government in Gujarat which, he said, has been looting the state since last 20 years. However, Kumar has been facing heat from Sharad Yadav, his senior colleague and leader of the parliamentary party in the Rajya Sabha.

JD-U leaders started targeting Yadav since last week after he spoke out against Nitish Kumar's decision to embrace the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mr Yadav is said to have the support of many state units of the JDU, which is a recognised party only in Bihar. The Congress' Ahmed Patel won after a late night drama on Tuesday thanks to the Election Commission of India invalidating two votes. He is also hoping that a lawmaker from Sharad Pawar's NCP has voted for him.

Meanwhile, the JDU has sacked Gujarat General Secretary Arun Srivastava for writing to the Returning Officer over the appointment of the party's election agent when he was not directed to do so, reported news agency ANI.
