The enterprising Yankee's knowledge of history, in particular the date and timing of the solar eclipse of June 21, 528, saves him from execution and elevates him to one of Arthur's most honored advisors. Mining the data from NASA, here are all the total solar eclipses touching the USA over the next 100 years. The eclipse will begin at 9:09 a.m. and end at 11:53 a.m. with a peak at 10:28 a.m., NPS said. Coverage will be featured during the live four-hour broadcast Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA. Homemade sun filters and regular sunglasses do not provide sufficient eye protection.

Some McDonald's locations outside of OR - including Missouri and Washington - are also selling eclipse glasses. Portland resident Dan Fellini bought a pack of four solar eclipse glasses with his wife and a friend.

The American Astronomical Society has listed manufacturers of eclipse glasses on their site, which are verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 worldwide safety standard. If the filters are torn, scratched, punctured, or coming loose from their cardboard or plastic frames, discard them, NPS recommended.

Here in OR, we won't see another total solar eclipse until 2169, when one will cross Portland, Seattle, Boise and Salt Lake City - though another one glances the OR coast in 2108.
