"If you were to look at the sun, what we usually see is damage to the macular of the retina, which is the center vision part of the eye".
The bottom line is that regular sunglasses - even the darkest ones - are not effective for the purposes of viewing the eclipse, Weng said.
"It's so unsafe for people to look at the sun even for brief periods of time because you can cause permanent damage to the retina", Dr. Van Gelder said.
The organization says buyers should be skeptical of glasses even if they're stamped with an ISO seal - which has been used in the past to indicate which glasses comply with standards set by the International Organization for Standardization. Also make sure that children and others around you are familiar with these safety precautions - it is every ophthalmologist's hope that everyone will enjoy the eclipse safely.
