Nissan workers reject United Auto Workers in Mississippi

"The courageous workers of Nissan, who fought tirelessly for union representation alongside community and civil-rights leaders, should be proud of their efforts to be represented by the UAW", said UAW President Dennis Williams in a statement.

Critically, the Detroit-based auto workers union is engaged in a campaign to unionize Nissan's vehicle factory in Canton, Mississippi.

We appreciate the National Labor Relations Board's role in conducting a fair election, and we believe this outcome positions Nissan to be competitive in the future.

The vote at the Canton plant could leave the UAW weakened ahead of contract negotiations with the Detroit Three automakers in 2019, when many analysts are predicting a cyclical slump for USA auto sales. Temporary workers who have not been classified as full-time start at around $13 per hour, the union said. If the labor board rules in favor of the charges, the board could order a fresh election. Nissan spokeswoman Parul Bajaj said the company provided all required information. Among the claims: Nissan provided a faulty contact list to the union, it caused a contract worker to be filed because of his union support, and a manager told workers July 28 that they would lose benefits it they voted for a union.

The union said in a statement it is asking the NLRB to proceed with a trial to "stop Nissan's serial commission of unfair labor practices in MS". The UAW is again launching baseless and unsubstantiated allegations against Nissan Canton in a desperate, last-minute attempt to undermine the integrity of the secret ballot voting process. A decision on the new charges could be months or years away. Her union boss husband, the late General Holiefield, was arrested in 2011 for "domestic violence" against his first wife, and in 2014 was forced to take a leave of absence from UAW after he "accidentally [and non-fatally] short Morgan in the stomach at their Harrison Township home". The union said it would "educate" the French government about Nissan's anti-union campaign. "The workers of Nissan deserve to have the job security, safe working conditions and collective bargaining power that come only from belonging to a union".

The vote comes after intense public pressure by both parties. The union did win an election to represent a small number of maintenance workers at a Volkswagen AG plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The UAW President expressed his opinions on Twitter. Now that the election is complete, Nissan will focus on bringing all employees back together as one team, building great vehicles and writing our next chapter in Mississippi.

Pro-union workers said the UAW would protect them against arbitrary treatment, and bargain for better benefits and pay.
