DNA of human embryos edited for 1st time in US


A team of researchers in OR have become the first to attempt to create genetically modified human embryos in the United States.

For the first time ever, American scientists have successfully edited the DNA of a human embryo - in the attempt to correct genes that cause inherited diseases, a report says.

The same technology could in theory be used to enhance the genes of IVF embryos with perceived beneficial traits, such as better eyesight or stronger muscles.

However, this aspect of the research is highly controversial and will be opposed by many religious and ethical organisations.

And NO: I don't trust "the scientists" to regulate themselves.

Researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland have carried out the first known attempt at creating genetically modified human embryos in the United States.

Results of the peer-reviewed study are expected to be published soon in a scientific journal, according to OHSU spokesman Eric Robinson.

To date, there have only been three previous reports of editing human embryos, all of which were published by scientists in China. Some want to do this to study embryonic development, with the ultimate aim of improving fertility treatments.

Although none of the embryos were allowed to develop for more than a few days-and there was never any intention of implanting them into a womb-the experiments are a milestone on what may prove to be an inevitable journey toward the birth of the first genetically modified humans.

The OHSU researchers are said to have broken new ground, Reuters reports. "So far as I know this will be the first study reported in the USA", says Jun Wu, a collaborator at the Salk Institute, in La Jolla, California, who played a role in the project.

Born in Kazakhstan when it was part of the Soviet Union, Shoukhrat Mitalipov, born in 1961, trained at a prestigious biological research institute in Moscow. In 2007, he unveiled the world's first cloned monkeys.
