Officers began searching just before 2 p.m. Wednesday for Jimmy Causey, an inmate at Lieber Correctional Institution, about 90 miles (149 km) southeast of Columbia, according to Sommer Sharpe, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. In fact, he and another inmate escaped the Broad River Correctional Institution in 2005 via a trash truck. Details of escape were not immediately available. Apprehension efforts are still continuing.

Causey was sentenced to life in prison on kidnapping charges from 2003 in connection with invading the home of high-powered defense attorney Jack Swirling, who defended Causey in a previous case.

A Dorchester County Sheriff's Office spokesperson told the newspaper that Causey is believed to be traveling alone. "We are operating on the assumption he may be headed this way, but there's no telling where he will go". There is a reward for information leading to capture. Anyone with information is asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 888-CRIME-SC.

It was not the first time Causey had escaped the slammer. An inmate had helped him dupe correctional officers by making dummies out of clothes and toilet paper.
