Prior to the four home runs allowed to the Tigers, Oregon State had only allowed 21 in 2017. I feel like we're playing so much better each passing day.
Among the moments that drove the Beavers, in a year they went 56-6 and set a new single-season school record for win percentage (.903), came after their first loss. Then the SEC powerhouse extended to 5-0 when Papierski smashed a 2-1 offering from the right side of the plate into the left-field bullpen to become the first player to hit two homers in a CWS game at TD Ameritrade Park - and first overall since 2010.
"I knew going into this game and watching the Alex [Lange] game [yesterday] I had to get a first pitch out or the first out of the inning", Gilbert said postgame.
"Josh had a huge walk and then Beau had a good two-out double, so I went up there knowing we needed to do something in the inning", Papierski said.
The Beavers' two hits were their fewest since they had four in their season opener against Indiana.
Since 2003, the only top-eight national seeds to win the CWS were LSU (2009) and SC (2011).
"My mentality was just take this team as deep into the game as I can", Lange said.
Oregon State hadn't lost back-to-back games all season, and the Beavers couldn't have picked a worse time for it to finally happen. "I had to get first-pitch strikes in there, and when I got ahead I wanted to make them pay for it".
Mourinho accused of tax evasion in Spain
All the cases involve income from image rights on endorsement side deals made by players, not salaries paid by clubs. Mascherano was also convicted of tax fraud last year and was given a suspended one-year sentence.
Oregon State's postseason was tainted by this month's revelation that Luke Heimlich, the Pacific-12 pitcher of the year, had pleaded guilty to molesting a 6-year-old female relative when he was a teenager. In an editorial accompanying the article, the newspaper said it learned about Heimlich's 2012 conviction in Washington state after running a background check that it routinely does for in-depth profiles.
Of course, a lot went down on the seventh day of this CWS - notably a pair of starting pitchers on the bracket favorites, previously unbeaten in Omaha, were handed their first losses of this season. He has 11 home runs on the year.
LSU counters with right-hander Caleb Gilbert, who has pitched 11 innings in relief without allowing an earned run this month. Only two other Oregon State batters reach base - Trevor Larnach walked and KJ Harrison singled in the fourth.
To get to the College World Series championship series, the LSU Tigers had to do something no team had done against the No. 1 Oregon State Beavers.
TCU (50-18) had beaten the Gators 9-2 on Friday to force the winner-take-all bracket final and the teams' third meeting in a week.
The Gators, the No. 3 seed nationally, had struggled on offense since they arrived in Omaha, but with Faedo holding down the Frogs, they were able to muster enough against Jared Janczak (9-2).
But Smith stayed patient, got back into the count and drew a full-count walk to keep the inning alive. Now the Tigers are two wins away from a national championship.
Janczak and Faedo were matched up for the second time. Byrne allowed a single by Zach Humphreys before retiring the last five TCU hitters, including three on strikeouts. That's the side of the plate from where the LSU baseball player had a late-season surge in production toward the end of his sophomore year. "To lose four games out of 60 when they came here, whatever their record was, you don't do that accidentally".
