Rep. Steve Scalise is still in critical condition, but his health is improving, the Congressman's surgeon said two days after Scalise was shot at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

The bullet that had hit Scalise was a single rifle round that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".

"He will be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", said Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, who spoke Friday about the Louisiana Republican who remains in critical condition at the hospital in the District.

Scalise was injured along with four others in the shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va. Sava said that when Scalise arrived at MedStar, he was in "shock" and had an "imminent risk of death".

Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

Nonetheless, Sava said, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said. Also shot were a congressional aide, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police officer. The hospital also said it will continue to provide periodical updates.
