Russian diplomat condemns US for downing Syrian fighter jet

The opinions expressed in this commentary are hers.

Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, called on the US military to provide a full accounting as to why it chose to shoot down the Syrian Su-22 bomber.

It's also a development that's been years in the making.

Six missiles with a range of between 650 to 700 kilometres (400-435 miles) were fired from western Iran, soaring over Iraqi territory and striking the targets in Deir al-Zor.

It added: "The US" repeated combat operations under the guise of "combating terrorism' against the legitimate armed forces of a United Nations member-state are a flagrant violation of global law, in addition to being actual military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic".

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that it "terminates cooperation with the US side within the framework of the Memorandum on Incident Prevention and Aviation Safety in operations in Syria from June 19, and demands a thorough investigation by the USA command (into the downing)".

But while National Defence says it is monitoring the situation, it otherwise wouldn't comment Monday on where the Canadian planes have been flying in Syria and whether they are in any increased risk of danger. Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway said coalition aircraft would continue conducting "operations throughout Syria, targeting ISIS forces and providing air support for Coalition partner forces on the ground". The Coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat ISIS in Syria poses globally.

Indeed, since 2011, those who wanted to avoid greater intervention in the battle against Assad feared that it would drag the USA, step-by-step, into another war in the Middle East.

It appeared to be Iran's first missile attack overseas in over 15 years and its first in the Syrian conflict, in which it has provided crucial support to Assad.

Number of people assumed dead in London tower block blaze to rise
Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard . Police also said that the number of people missing and assumed dead had risen from the previously official toll of 58.

Yet here we are. SDF fighters are aligned with the Americans in the campaign against the Islamic State group.

And for years the idea was discarded, in no small part because the U.S. did not want to find itself in direct conflict with the Syrian regime.

He added that he has not yet spoken to his Russian counterpart, but the United States will "work diplomatically and militarily in the coming hours to re-establish deconfliction".

This is not the first time that Russian Federation has said the "de-confliction" channel has been suspended.

Felgenhauer added that this happened various times before the latest incident when USA planes came close to Russian bases in Syria.

Moscow has suspended co-ordination with the USA in Syria over "deconfliction" zones after Washington designated zones unilaterally.

"If you want, it's actually help for the terrorists the U.S. is fighting, declaring that they are conducting a counterterrorism policy", the official added.

Dunford said the U.S. -Russia military hotline established under the 2015 memorandum has been useful.
