The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine container ship off the coast of Japan in the early hours of Saturday morning local time, according to the Navy's 7th Fleet.
"U.S. and Japanese support from the Navy, Maritime Self-Defense Force and Coast Guard are in the area to ensure that the sailors on USS Fitzgerald have the resources they need to stabilize their ship", said Adm. John Richardson, Chief of Naval Operations, in an earlier statement. The names of the Sailors will be released after all notifications are made. However, Aucoin said that, "his cabin had been damaged". "They had to fight the ship to keep it above the surface".
She didn't say how many were found. Bryce Benson, was airlifted from the ship's deck after daybreak Saturday to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka with a head injury.
"Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the sailors", said Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. He said one machinery room and two berthing areas for 116 crew members were severely damaged from what he called a significant impact to its side.
According to the Japan Coast Guard, the collision occurred about 100 km southwest of Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, and was first reported by the Philippine container vessel at around 2:25 a.m. local time on Saturday. Other sailors, believing the ship was under attack, hurried to man the guns. "The Navy owes the family and the nation a prompt investigation", Blumenthal said. Most of the more than 200 sailors aboard would have been asleep in their berths at the time of the pre-dawn crash.

The ACX Crystal weighs 29,060 tons and is 222 meters (730 feet) long, much larger than the 8,315-ton destroyer.
Japan's coastguard is conducting an investigation into the accident - including interviewing the container ship's Filipino crew - although the United States has primary jurisdiction in probing accidents involving military personnel. Many scratches were also seen in the frontal area.
Multiple US and Japanese investigations are under way on how a ship as large as the container could ram into the smaller warship in clear weather.
The coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and is treating the collision as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.
Nippon Yusen K.K., the Japanese company operating the merchant vessel, said the 20 member Filipino crew aboard the ship was safe. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a sympathy message to President Donald Trump on Sunday.
