United States allies determined to sidestep Trump on climate

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he would withdraw from the Paris climate change accord, saying that participating would undermine the economy, wipe out jobs, weaken U.S. national sovereignty, and put the country at a permanent disadvantage to others.

"(Paris) is not the only mechanism by which environmental stewardship can be demonstrated", added Pruitt, who had left the meeting on Sunday evening to attend Trump's first full cabinet meeting on Monday. In a footnote to the communique, the United States said it wouldn't join with the other six countries in reaffirming their Paris commitments, but said it was taking action on its own to reduce its carbon footprint.

The leaders' communiqué, agreed just days before Trump announced he would pull out of the Paris agreement, said the USA was not in a position to join the consensus because it was still reviewing its climate policies.

"The world, through the Paris Accord, has made the commitment to make the turn to a decarbonised future".

During his brief visit, Pruitt had time to meet several of his counterparts, including a stint rolling out pasta and eating prosciutto with Italy's Minister of Environment Gian Luca Galletti.

"We are resetting the dialogue to say Paris is not the only way forward to making progress", Pruitt said in statement issued by the EPA after the talks.

In fact, the day after the president's announcement, a total of 1,219 governors, mayors, businesses, investors, and colleges and universities signed on to what is in fact an "America First" climate pledge to see that the us "remains a global leader in reducing carbon emissions".

G7 environment chiefs met in Italy on Sunday for talks set to be dominated by the rift caused by the United States' withdrawal from the Paris climate change accord.
