Rivals 'all Team Scalise' as political baseball clash honours shot Republican

Dr. Jack Sava gave an update on Scalise's condition Friday afternoon and said Scalise was on the brink of death when he got to the hospital by helicopter Wednesday morning.

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a Republican congressional baseball practice.

He suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

The director of trauma for MedStar Washington Hospital said Rep. Steve Scalise's condition when he arrived at the hospital was "as critical as it could be".

"After he leaves the hospital, he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

Doctors say Scalise came to the hospital at "imminent risk of death", but Sava now says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".

Earlier Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan paid a visit to his injured colleague, who faces the prospect of a lengthy hospitalization after getting shot in the hip at a baseball practice by a deranged man with grudges against Trump and the GOP. The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added as a beneficiary on Wednesday. "We have controlled the internal bleeding, and his vital signs have stabilized", Sava said at a press conference. Scalise will undergo more operations.

From the stands, Vince Wetzel, a resident of Sacramento, California, said: "It's just a good call to put aside political differences and just play some baseball".

"We are encouraged by improvement of his condition over the last 36 hours", Sava said.

China launches X-ray telescope for black hole observation
"We want to use it to resolve mysteries such as the evolution of black holes and the strong magnetic fields of neutron stars". It would also enable engineers to explore ways of using pulsars as benchmarks for new-generation space navigation technology.

"And let's keep the Warmbier family and the Scalise family and all of the victims of the congressional shooting in our hearts and prayers", Trump continued.

"We pray for all of the victims of this awful crime who are still recovering - including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many".

"When tragedy strikes we are family", said Rep. Nanette Barragan of California, who plays on the Democratic baseball team and invited all to attend the congressional charity baseball game Thursday night at Nationals Park.

"We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country", he said.

The gunman, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, was shot multiple times and later died.

Law enforcement officials proceeded Friday with their investigation of the attack at a suburban Virginia park, including examining Hodgkinson's social media activities and his home in Belleville, Illinois.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams was also injured Wednesday but still coached the Republican team during Thursday's contest.

Suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

The FBI and Alexandria Police Department said in a joint statement Thursday that federal authorities had examined the rifle and handgun recovered from the scene and determined that Hodgkinson had bought them from licensed sellers.
