Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.
When Scalise first arrived at the hospital, "he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said in a press conference Friday.
Even with the progress over the last two days, though, Sava said Scalise will remain in the hospital for the near future.
Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".
His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said.
Sava says infection remains a risk, after doctors performed several surgeries to stop bleeding and begin repairing abdominal and bone damage.

Despite a flurry of late birdies it was not enough to turnaround an erratic round littered with errors and missed opportunities. It is going to be a surprisingly quiet weekend for defending champion and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson , as well as Nos.
Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.
Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run".
"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.
"The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.
"Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and all of those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts as they face recovery". The team was preparing for the annual congressional baseball game, which took place as planned on Thursday. A gunman, now identified as James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on the lawmakers, spraying bullets that left Scalise in critical condition and four others wounded. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally. A lobbyist, a congressional aide, and two Capitol Police officers were also injured in the shooting. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.
