Mike Pence hires his private lawyer in Russian Federation probe

Even Vice President Mike Pence has hired a lawyer to represent him during the investigation.

Pence took several weeks longer than the president to choose former US attorney and Virginia state attorney general Richard Cullen as his counsel on the myriad of ongoing Russia-related investigations.

In May, President Donald Trump hired lawyer Marc Kasowitz - who previous year represented the Trump campaign and has previously represented Trump personally - to serve as the president's attorney for investigation-related issues.

Pence communications director Jarrod Agen confirmed Thursday that Pence hired Richard Cullen, former US attorney who is chairman of McGuire Woods, a Washington-based law firm.

That's according to a statement from Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen.

Two Washington campaign finance lawyers said Thursday night the rules offer leeway when hiring outside legal representation.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was recently fired by Trump, and Cullen worked together at McGuireWoods. Paul Trible during the Iran-Contra investigation, and in the 1970s, he served during the Watergate investigation on the staff of Rep.

"It's very routine", Pence said.

Pence has hired Richard Cullen, the chairman of McGuireWoods in Richmond and a former U.S. attorney with extensive experience handling government investigations, according to a spokesman for Pence.

The White House has said the president "has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn".

Pence has stood by his March statement that he first learned of the now-fired national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Turkey from media reports.

His other high-profile clients have included Tom DeLay, the former Republican majority leader who was investigated by the Department of Justice for his relationship with Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff; Elin Nordegren, the ex-wife of Tiger Woods, in her divorce from the golf star; and former Sen.

Pence has seldom addressed the Russian Federation issue, which has overshadowed Trump's efforts to overhaul the healthcare system, cut taxes and boost jobs - priorities that Pence has worked on intensively with Republican lawmakers.

The vice president's decision to enlist outside legal counsel marks the most recent in a flurry of moves by the Trump administration to combat investigations into Russian meddling with the election.

Putin also echoed Trump's criticism of Comey, saying it was " very strange" for a former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief to leak details of his conversations with the US president to the media through a friend.
