Congressional Baseball Players to Wear Colors of Scalise's Favorite Team

Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican shot Wednesday on a Virginia baseball field outside Washington, remains in critical condition but has a chance for an "excellent recovery", the chief trauma doctor at a Washington hospital said Friday.

The game raised about $500,000 for charity past year, according to spokeswoman Meredith Raimondi.

Scalise had been fielding balls at second base when he was shot and then dragged himself away from the infield in a trail of blood. His House colleagues paid tribute to him at their annual charity baseball game, while law enforcement tracked the path the shooter traveled to his ballfield carnage.

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice.

When it was all over the Democrats won by a score of 11 to 2, but for the fans that showed up to the Nationals Park and the members of Congress who participated, the result was more about unity instead of wins and losses.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", he said.

President Donald Trump shared a message Thursday night prior to the Congressional Baseball game at Nationals Park, saying the fact that the game was still being played was sending a message to the world "that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy". "And we thank all the members of Alexandria Fire, Police and Rescue", Trump said.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader, was first elected in 2008.

"When he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said, adding that the Louisiana lawmaker is expected to be in the hospital for weeks.

Grief over Grenfell Tower inferno turns into anger
The news came as the Government announced those left homeless by the fire will be given at least £5,500 from an emergency fund. These include the Adair Tower, a 14-story apartment that was set afire in an arson attack in October 2015.

As the game progressed, MedStar Washington Hospital Center released an update on Scalise's condition.

Scalise was shot in the hip, with the bullet tearing through his pelvis and injuring internal organs.

"He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries", Sava said.

Scalise's wife, Jennifer, has been by his side, as Trump and others stopped by to pay visits.

"Both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees", the Capitol Police said in a statement.

The man's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

Underscoring the day's mood, the Rev. Patrick Conroy, the House chaplain, opened the day by seeking divine forgiveness "when we seem to forget that words matter and can become seeds that will bring bitter harvest".

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and remains hospitalized.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
