A judge in Pennsylvania has declared a mistrial in the Bill Cosby rape case, after a jury deliberated for 52 hours but failed to reach an agreement on whether or not the comedian drugged and molested a woman at his home in 2004.
Within moments of the mistrial being declared, the Montgomery County District Attorney's office announced that they will retry the case.
The jury was comprised of five women and seven men.
Constand told prosecutor Kristen Feden she was unable to stop the sex attack because her body was "limp" - the result, she claimed, of the unidentified pills Cosby suggested she take to help her "relax".
He did not give evidence, leaving it to his lawyer Brian McMonagle to argue Cosby and Constand were lovers and the encounter was consensual.
He is accused of assaulting Andrea Constand without her consent, assaulting her when she was unconscious and assaulting her using drugs to substantially impair her ability to consent in his home outside of Philadelphia, in Elkins Park, in early 2004. "Round two is just around the corner", she said.
Cosby's starring role as beloved dad Heathcliff Huxtable in "The Cosby Show", along with years of family-friendly standup comedy routines, made him a household name.
However, prosecutors said they would retry Cosby and he still faces a slew of civil lawsuits.
Within a few months of the alleged assault, Constand moved back to her native Canada where she lived with her mother.
"Mr. Cosby's power is back - it's back".
In a statement, her lawyers thanked the prosecution for taking her case and said the trial had "given a voice to the many victims who felt powerless and silenced".
One Pulse, one love
People in Clarksville came together at McGregor Park to mark the anniversary of the attack in Orlando. One homophobic protestor was arrested just outside Pulse nightclub.
"Try him again. Heart goes out to women who came forward". In 2005, prosecutors declined to charge Cosby based on Constand's account, and she filed a lawsuit that Cosby settled for an undisclosed sum.
'I am compelled to declare a mistrial.
"How do I describe the counsels for the accusers?"
The judge, meanwhile, assured the panel members - whose identities remain sealed by court order - that he appreciated their efforts throughout the two-week trial. Cosby admitted to obtaining the prescription sedative to give to multiple women with whom he wanted to have sex, and said that he didn't take the drug himself.
"We can never underestimate the blinding power of celebrity, but justice will come".
Dozens of women accuse Cosby of assaulting them, but statutes of limitation rules mean he was allowed to be tried for Ms Constand's allegation only.
"Do you agree there is a hopeless deadlock that can not be resolved by further deliberations?" he asked each juror. I also want to thank the supporters who have been here.
As jurors left for the night, O'Neill praised their "hard work, dedication and fidelity to your oath".
They first informed Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday that they were deadlocked, but were instructed to keep trying.
Jurors got the case on Monday.
"This case is about a drug-facilitated sexual assault and it doesn't matter what you look like or who you are".
