Annual US Congress baseball game brings unity after shooting

Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington.

"It seems self-evident that when the teams are practicing, there should be security there", Pelosi said. Though the game pegs Republicans against Democrats, attendees and participating lawmakers showed unity in wake of the shooting.

A day earlier, a man with a rifle and a handgun wounded Scalise and others at a baseball practice in a park in nearby Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader, was first elected in 2008.

Cheered by Cuba hardliners in both parties, Trump's new policy is broadly opposed by USA businesses eager to invest in Cuba.

"The comments made by my Republican colleagues are outrageous", declared Pelosi, the Democratic leader from California.

Pelosi pointed out that she herself has faced verbal attacks and threats aplenty, including phone calls to her home she blamed on ads critical of her that are airing now in a Georgia House district where a hard-fought special election will take place next week.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

"Steve is a wonderful friend he's been a wonderful mentor not only to me, not only to the Louisiana delegation to which he's a member of but to the entire Republican congress" said Rep. Ralph Abraham. Clyburn charged that Trump "is allowed to hide behind political correctness to say all kinds of things about people, and I'm a little bit sick and exhausted of people saying anything they want to say about anyone they want to say it about". He is one of two shooting victims at that hospital.

Deputy AG: 'Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations'
Sessions and Trump were reportedly so at odds with Sessions' recusal from the case that Sessions even tendered his resignation. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.

"That was tough for me", Duncan said.

Still, finger-pointing lingered as some on each side suggested the other had contributed more to the disparaging broadsides they've increasingly aimed at each other.

Aguilar plays outfield for the Democratic team; before the shooting, Scalise was slated to play second base for the Republicans. Patty Murray, D-Wash., grilled Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price hard on whether he agreed with Trump's charge that the GOP-written House health care bill was "mean".

The Castro government is certain to reject Trump's list of demands, which includes releasing political prisoners, halting what the USA says is abuse of dissidents and greater freedom of expression. And he had this really emotional moment talking about the moment that they saw each other after the shooting.

Doctors say the bullet injured internal organs, fractured bones and broke a bone in his leg. But unlike some other Republicans he was reluctant to assign blame for what happened on Wednesday.

"Had a chance to talk to him about his priorities, had a chance to talk to him about his family, had a chance to talk to him about that fact that he was gonna be playing in this baseball game", Neal said.

"But people down here, members of Congress, are just trying to make the country better", Costello added.

"After taking dollar bills out of his wallet, [resident Mike Quinn] attempted to shove them into Cramer's suit pocket. pushing him in the process while saying his money could go toward the medical expenses of the woman's child", the Tribune reports. More than 20,000 tickets to the baseball game had been sold by 4 p.m. Thursday, raising more than $1 million for underprivileged youth in Washington, D.C., according to Roll Call.

The baseball tradition is said to have forged a friendship between Richmond and his fellow Louisiana representative Steve Scalise.
