When the news broke that Amazon had agreed to buy Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, the retail food sector went a little bananas.

That said, there is some speculation that Amazon could end up changing its plans and ultimately use advanced technology inside Whole Foods stores.

"Maybe feels hyperbolic but I think it could be one of the biggest acquisitions in the last 20 years in terms of the ability to kind of bring together technological innovation and this sort of physical footprint that Whole Foods has", Bunch said.

Whole Foods and Amazon both have significant warehouses in Texas. Whole Foods' headquarters will still be in Austin. The acquisition marks an enormous step for Amazon, moving the company from being a predominantly web-based retailer to one that operates physical stores too.

"If they actually, Amazon Prime, decides to deliver food to your home, boy that's great, it would be a wonderful thing!" "Amazon is the master at keeping as much margin as possible". The app would then have automatically charged whatever products they took out of the store with them to their Amazon account.

Those who are sanctioned would have their assets within US jurisdiction frozen and would be barred from entering the country. " Any idea of the president's that he can lift sanctions on his own for whatever reason are dashed by this legislation ".

The deal represents a dramatic turn in strategy for Amazon, which has offered food delivery through its AmazonFresh service for a decade, but has not made a major dent in the $700bn grocery market.

Jana, Whole Foods' second largest investor, had been pushing the company to perform better and add directors with experience in retail, technology, finance and real estate. We hope that won't be the case with this proposed acquisition of Whole Foods.

"From the beginning, we've been committed to helping grocers compete online", the startup said in a statement late Friday.

Grocery stores are under more pressure to compete based on convenience, especially as more retailers and startups introduce food options such as meal kits, low-priced snacks and organic groceries, according to a report released earlier this year by Jones Lang LaSalle, a commercial real estate firm. Over the past few years, #Grocery Retailers have fought against online entrants into the market, and with this most recent purchase, the fight has only grown.

Delivery and pickup are also systems ripe for disruption. In addition, Instacart has a number of advertising partnerships with consumer packaged goods companies that pay to reach out to Instacart customers as they're shopping digitally.

Bunch says from a marketing perspective, this is a big deal.

Ryne Misso of the research firm Market Track said a customer who buys fresh fruit regularly at Whole Foods might be offered a deal on blenders and serving bowls.
