Votto leads Reds to 5-2 win, 4-game sweep of Cardinals

Cincinnati Reds Patrick Kivlehan (3) celebrates a three-run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals with Scott Schebler (43) and Scooter Gennett (4) during the seventh inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, in Cincinnati. "Guys do that now and then". Kivlehan was called upon with the Reds down a field goal and a pair of runners on late, and he responded with a huge 3-run homer that leveled the score and brought life back to the dugout after Lance Lynn had been nails against them for his portion of the game. Carpenter batted leadoff for the first time this season. Some seasons, he barely hit four homers at all - he reached double-digits only once and had 38 career heading into the game.

In the past, players have ranged from Josh Hamilton to Gil Hodges to Lou Gehrig, all being a part of an exclusive group of players that have hit four home runs in a game.

Here's to you, Scooter Gennett! "It's maybe a little short of a miracle", Gennett, who is listed at 5 feet, 10 inches and 185 pounds, said after the game. Whiten did it in 1993 at the Reds' old riverfront ballpark, driving in 12 runs that stand as the major league record.

"It's wonderful, especially since Scooter is not an everyday player for us", manager Bryan Price said. "He's got power, but four homers in one game?"

"It's very emotional. It was an honor to witness that". Just think that in the over 140 years of major league baseball, only 17 players have hit four home runs in a game.

Mayor Irvin T. "Butch" Callery declared Wednesday, June 7, to be Scooter Gennett Day in the city, in celebration of Gennett's performance in the Reds' 13 to 1 win over the Cardinals. Not only is it exciting watching any player crack a ball over the fence, it's truly remarkable to see them do it multiple times in one game. "He initiated another throwing program that will take him close to the time that Homer (Bailey) and (Brandon) Finnegan might be ready - that last week or week-and-a-half of June". In the sixth inning, Gennett hit a solo home run.

Stoops out at Oklahoma
Although he claimed health wasn't the deciding factor, he's also been quoted as saying he wouldn't coach past age 55. Only four times in Stoops' career did the Sooners win less than 10 games, and he never had a losing record.

Feldman (5-4) limited the Cardinals' slumping lineup to four singles in seven shutout innings. He was sailing along through the first four innings but gave up the ghost in the fifth. Sabathia has won four straight starts for the first time since 2012. On the other side, the Reds are 8-2 in their last 10 home games versus a team with a losing record and are 9-4 in their last 13 home games versus a right-handed starter. Wainwright fell to 9-11 career against Cincinnati with a 5.01 ERA. Finnegan, out since mid-April with a strained shoulder muscle, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session with the Blue Wahoos on Sunday.

Wandy Peralta (3-1) got the win in relief of Bronson Arroyo.

He allowed 10 hits - including three by Duvall, the player for whom he was traded to the Giants by the Reds and who has hits in six straight plate appearancs against Leake - and three total runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

Cardinals: Rookie INF Paul DeJong made his first start at shortstop in place of Aledmys Diaz, who got a day off. DeJong has started eight games at second base, but played both positions in the minors.

After that, the combo of Lorenzen and Iglesias again cinched things for Cincinnati, as they locked down a 6-4 victory! He's 0-3 in six career starts against the Reds with a 4.95 ERA.
